Pix of the day. Friday, June 28th

Bryan Chalker and his gang of volunteers worked hard to get this old Stothert and Pitt crane looking its painted best a few years ago.

Library picture. November 2016.

When he was Mayor of Bath – and a councillor with B&NES – Bryan helped rescue one of the last remaining rail-mounted, self-propelled steam cranes to be built by one of the city’s most famous industrial concerns. This was all way back in 2016.

All credit to Crest Nicholson – the developers at Western Riverside – for including it as a memorial to the S and P crane factory (Victoria Works) that once occupied this site.

However, in cycling by this monument to Bath’s industrial past yesterday, l noticed that rust is starting to appear in places.

I have no idea who is responsible for maintaining the crane, but it would be a shame to see it being allowed to degenerate to the point it has to be removed.

  1. -Crest Nicholson could easily get a tin or two of Rustoleum paint & repair this in an hour.
    – The residents of Riverside could get together & have a £ donation collection.
    – neighbouring paint company Crown could donate some rust-specific paint.
    – Bath College/Uni students learning about painting crafts could be trained on how to paint this.
    – Preservation/National Trust/Renovation organisations could offer to preserve this.
    – Bath Council could step in with some young offenders for an afternoon of renovation Learning.
    Where has Bath’s pride gone???
