Bath’s noty lacking when it comes to museums and, while the latest to open may be modest in size, it’s promising BIG exhibitions when it comes to public interest.
I hear the Mayor of Bath, Cllr Dine Romero, was ‘intrigued, fascinated and wowed’ on her visit to open newcomer Bath Medical Museum’s latest exhibition ‘Enabling the less abled’.
Two jaw dropping exhibits vied for the best of the show. The first was Bath’s own Designability’s ‘wizzybug’ designed to help the under fives get around without have to rely on their parents. It stimulated visitors’ admiration regarding the clever inventors who came up with the idea.
Designabiity manufactures this extremely useful invention at the bottom of Wellsway and makes the tiny wheelchair available free to any family requiring it.
The second intriguing and thought provoking piece was provided by local artist Paul Browne. His installation ‘Enabling the less abled’ clearly demonstrates the ethos of the whole of the BMM Exhibition. One electric fan generously shares its energy with a second disconnected and potentially immobile partner.
For fascination and intrigue a small exhibition provided by Emeritus Professor Tony Miles of the University of Bath of artificial human joints and their development over the last half century, won the prize for attention grabbing.
In addition there was an explanatory poster of the research results from a small team of Young PhD Researchers at UoB regarding exercises suitable for patients with osteoporosis of the knee.
There were also attention grabbing interactive exhibits ranging from ‘Bone up on a skeleton’ to the quiet relaxation and concentration of the creation of a Zen Garden.
The exhibition is open every day from 10am to 4pm until 28th February at The Hetling Pump Room opposite The Hot Bath and close to Bath Thermae Spa
In addition as part of The Well Being Festival Bath Medical Museum has created a shop window trail around the centre of Bath dealing with aspect of ‘Wellness’. All the details are on the bathmedicalmuseum.org website.
