Generating funds for Ukraine

A fundraising concert at Bath Abbey has been announced to help send generators to the city of Oleksandriya, a Ukrainian city which has built ties of friendship with communities in Bath and North East Somerset.

The urgent fundraising appeal was started by the Friends of Oleksandriya and is supported by B&NES Council, the Rotary Club of Bath, the schools across the region and both universities. It has already enabled 13 generators to be delivered to the people of the city. These are now helping to provide warmth and light to their kindergartens and schools. With temperatures in the city plunging to minus 11 and with lower temperatures expected, the need is now even more urgent to get more of the larger size generators to help provide power for their children’s hospital and general hospital.

Bath Abbey is hosting a concert of warmth and light, which will take place at 7pm on February 24th, the first anniversary of the Russian invasion into Ukraine. The concert will feature local Ukrainian singer, Nicole Medin , a crystal voice telling a story which evokes the desperate plight of the Ukrainian people. She will be joined by the well-known children’s choir Voices for Life and by two local choirs, Canzona and the Trowbridge Philharmonic Choir.

Former Mayor of Bath, Marian McNeir MBE, who is helping to organise the concert, would love to see the Abbey full to bursting for this important fund-raising concert.

Marian says, ” Don’t miss the unforgettable, haunting voice of Nicole Medin wonderfully supported by local choirs. This will be an evening to remember – it’s sure to be a sell out so don’t delay in buying your tickets “.

Zhenya Shkil is a local resident of Ukrainian origin and the founding member of Friends of Oleksandriya. She has been overwhelmed by the generosity of donors from across B&NES. “This concert will help to provide further warmth and light for the city which has already provided shelter for over 30,000 internal refugees. This is a strong signal of our friendship and support and even more importantly it is vital, practical help. The people of Oleksandriya have shouldered so much throughout the last year and this is our chance to help them “
