Back in business.

Great to see the cycle hoops back in place and being well used at the High Street end of Cheap Street.

Can we now have more hoops reinstated outside the Guildhall please, where the very expensive bronze hoops used to be.

Apparently they were top-heavy and easily pushed over. Style over substance. There are still some of them in place opposite Bath City College.

Maybe they too should be replaced and the whole store of bronze hoops sold off for scrap to help with next year’s council budget.

Pleased to add to this story, following an email from Cllr Sarah Warren who is the B&NES cabinet member responsible for climate and sustainable travel.

She says of the bike stands at the High Street end of Cheap Street:

“As you know, the current arrangement is for some of the bike racks close to the Guildhall to be removable for ceremonial events. There have been issues with finding suitable fixings that remain secure but are removable.

The racks were recently reinstalled after a delay in receiving parts during 2022. Unfortunately, some of the fixings were subject to vandalism over the Christmas holiday period, with the specialist bolts (which use non-standard heads to deter theft) being cut. Council officers are now in the process of replacing these.

I have asked the team to look at all options going forward that will both prevent further vandalism and will facilitate management of the racks.

There is a much wider package of work to improve cycle infrastructure across Bath and NE Somerset and I am committed to improving cycle storage as part of this.”
