The man they called ‘Big R’

Today l joined many former colleagues, and continuing friends, in helping to say goodbye to our old boss from our days at HTV West.

Ron Evans gave me my break in television and shaped – what l consider to be the best regional news programme of the 70’s and 80’s – Report West.

‘Big R’ moved onto even greater management responsibilities but l – and many others – will be eternally grateful to him for the opportunities he gave us and the careers he helped launch.

We joined Val his wife, and other members of his lovely family, at St Peter’s Church in Portishead to bid farewell to a talented and gentle giant and to a life well lived and surrounded with love and respect.

I am proud to have known him, and it was so nice to share memories with so many of those who had shared those days spent working on the Bath Road in Bristol – some l consider to be the most exhilarating and rewarding of my life.
