I was talking recently about the new paving on Sydney Place, which reminded Rob Coles:

“We (History of Bath Research Group) once walked around the centre of Bath with the geologist Elizabeth Devon.  She opened our eyes to the wonders of paving stones and the marble of shop fronts, etc that we take for granted.

I learned that the large black flagstones, that are my particular love, and so much a feature of Abbey Churchyard, came from Caithness and are no longer available and therefore irreplaceable.

I am most concerned when I see vehicles driving over them and when work is being carried out.”
