Say it with sunflowers

Covid continue to thwart the traditional Celebration of Past Mayors – which has not been possible for the last couple of years – and which was postponed yet again last week.

This has given one of our past mayors a problem! Councillor Manda Rigby, the 793rd Mayor of Bath, explains…

“Many Mayors choose to make a gift to the City on leaving Office. I had what I thought was a great idea, but the cancellation of the physical meeting made putting it into practice impossible in the way I had envisaged”.

“I had bought enough sunflower seeds to give everyone at the celebration a packet and encourage them to share with their neighbours. My theme was ‘Combatting Loneliness, Bath the Friendly City’, sunflowers are a friendly flower, and they are also the national flower of Ukraine. I’d love to see Bath awash with them when we welcome refugees.”

Manda and some fellow Charter Trustees have started distributing packets round the City, for planting soon.

“I’m giving some to shops to give away, delivering some through doors, asking the Bath & North East Somerset Parks Team if they have anywhere suitable for planting. I hope they bring some joy, and any excuse to talk to your neighbours is good.… I understand there may be friendly local competition brewing for tallest flower!”
