New plans for Scala site.

Student accommodation and affordable housing are two of the ingredients being offered in proposals to redevelop The Scala site in Oldfield Park.

The plans – which will retain the historic building and frontage – are being put forward by the Co-op and local development partner Rengen.

The development proposals include a new Co-op convenience store, refurbished space for the successful dance ‘Freedom through Dance’ studio, new residential units and affordable housing and parking.

Rengen is also proposing to provide purpose-built student accommodation in a deal with Norland College.

The College, which was founded in 1892, is a world-renowned provider of childcare training and education. Its students study for a BA (Hons) degree in Early Years Development and Learning alongside the prestigious Norland Diploma.

Norland College won a ‘Gold’ rating for the standard of its teaching for the second year running and   was rated the top Independent Higher Education provider in the Student Choice Awards 2019.

Dr Janet Rose, Principal of Norland College said, “We are delighted to be in discussions with Rengen and see this as a very exciting opportunity for the College. With the Scala site being situated in such close proximity to Norland College, it will allow our students to have better access to the campus and its facilities during their studies.

Rengen has an impressive portfolio of complex renovation and redevelopment projects throughout Bath, including the former Labour Exchange building on James Street West, Widcombe Social Club and the Bath Sea Cadets headquarters on St John’s Road.

A public exhibition will be held at Hayesfield Girls School, Upper Oldfield Park, Bath on the 13th September between 5:30pm and 8pm and the 14th September between 10am and 4pm. Members of the public will be welcomed by members of the team to answer any questions.
