The UNESCO World Heritage symbol – set in the cobblestones of Stall Street – is something Heritage Services chief Stephen Bird steps over on his way to work every morning.
But at 8 am – on Monday, December 10th – he will use it to mark the start of a five day walk he is undertaking to raise money for a very special charity.
As Head of Heritage Services, he is deeply involved with the multi-million pound Archway Project to develop educational and information facilities at the Roman Baths.
A range of ornately-decorated nearby buildings will be brought back into use with the help of Heritage Lottery funding.
However, this also involves ‘match-funding’ and Stephen has come up with a novel way of doing his own personal bit to help.

“The Project has ‘permission to start’ from the Heritage Lottery Fund but, although planning for the Centre is well under way, fund-raising continues.
I will be doing the walk in my own time and will pay all my costs, so that every penny donated will go via the Foundation towards setting up the World Heritage Centre.
