Rare Roman find at Abbey

Hot on the heels of unearthing part of a mediaeval tiled floor – while engaged on the Footprint Project at Bath Abbey – archaeologists working for Wessex Archaeology have now added a high status Roman object to their list of discoveries.

Detail of part of the floor discovered in Bath Abbey. It would have paved part of the Norman Cathedral on the ruins of which the present Abbey was constructed.

Cai Mason is Senior Project Officer for Wessex and l caught a quick chat on my ‘phone – as the news broke while l was in town.

Archaeologists are working ahead of contractors – called in to stabilise the floor, install underfloor heating and construct new facilities for public and Abbey staff in a multi-million pound – HLF funded – project being carried out over the next two years.

Wessex Archaeology have released a ‘cleaned-up’ version which shows how well [reserved the seal box is!
