After the sunshine – some more good news today. Rebecca at the Well – the sculpture in white marble also known as Rebecca’s Fountain which stands on the north side of Bath Abbey – has running water again!

The figure of a young girl in eastern costume pouring water into a bowl was erected by Bath Temperance Association in 1861. It also bears the inscription ‘Water is Best’. When first positioned it faced quite a few public houses in the High Street in a stand-off against the ‘Devil’s brew’.

The structure has recently been cleaned and conserved by stone mason students at Bath City College and l was pleased today to see that once more there is a flow of H2o! Rebecca was originally used as a drinking fountain and running water was a feature until the 1980’s
