Pic of the day. Thursday, March 26th

The scaffolding has almost reached the top of the Abbey tower to enable repairs to start on a leaky roof.

With my head for heights l don’t think I would shine as a scaffolder. Go carefully, chaps.

  1. This pic brought back memories to me!
    My First Assignment:
I suppose it was when I got to around 150 feet off the ground, almost to the top of the beautiful Bath Abbey tower, that I realised my new job was not going to be mundane.
It was Monday July 1st 1957 and it was my first day as a Junior Photographer with the Bath Chronicle. As the Abbey was under renovation the paper had, he had arranged for one of the team to do some pictures.
It wasn’t scaffolding as we know it today, with Health & Safety rules dictating safety helmets, belts, clips and protection- in those days it was just endless ladders roped together. And as for safety clothing, it was my sports jacket and smart “new job” shoes.
I managed to get to the top…enjoyed the view, did a selection of shots and cautiously retraced my steps down and along the road to the office. It made the front page that week in the Bath Weekly Chronicle A good start
