The X they are a changing

It was never my favourite subject at school, but then again, we didn’t have the benefit of modern technology. Oh, those times x tables still give me nightmares!

So for the youngsters of today, it’s good to know that a locally-based hi-tech company is there to help with the subject.

Pageticker is a digital reading diary and the brainchild of Bath‑based teachers‑turned‑founders Tom Minor and Nicola Chilman, who previously built the successful maths app DoodleMaths.

Combining their passions for reading and maths, they have created a curated booklist to celebrate World Maths Day on Wednesday, 26 March 2026.

Maths conversations can start anywhere, from recognising door numbers as you walk, shapes in the supermarket or counting people or dogs in the park. Books can also be a great prompt for maths discussions. Here, Pageticker share top picks from in‑house book expert Carrie McCarthy, spotlighting age‑appropriate titles for:

• 2-5 years: One Ted Falls Out of Bed by Julia Donaldson and Spinderella by Julia Donaldson.
• 6-8 years: That’s Mathematics by Chris Smith and The Most Magnificent Thing by Ashley Spires
• 9–11 years: The Mysterious Benedict Society by Trenton Lee Stewart and The Number Devil: A Mathematical Adventure by Hans Magnus Enzensberger
