I cannot believe it. We had only been here for a day and, socially, find ourselves in the top five percent.
It was an ‘award’ given to us by our taxi driver last night. On our way into town to our favourite pizza restaurant, she very kindly told us we smelt nice. Seventy per cent of her customers apparently do not.
Which is why she keeps a bottle of cheap scent in her cab. Not for her own use, she quickly explained, but to ‘fumigate’ the car once the more nasally obnoxious have paid and got out.
I know you are doing your maths now and wondering about the other twenty per cent. They apparently must be using a more run of the mill perfume. Enough not to cause offence but not what you would call a grand cru.
I am sure she was genuine in her praise but it was a great way of getting a good tip, regardless.
PS. We are in Gran Canaria – off the coast of Africa – one of the seven islands that make up the Canaries.
Enjoy yourselves in Gran Canaria as this is where my 60 year old son started his trip across the great Atlantic 2 months ago, in a small boat with 4 other friends and their sail took 20 days to Antigua. Some drama on the way but they managed very well and were welcome with great aplomb on arrival!
