Silence is golden

I am easily distracted on a walk home from town – especially if there is a churchyard anywhere near.

We used to joke about HTV West on Bristol’s Bath Road being in the ‘dead centre’ of town because it was next door to the beautiful Arnos Vale Cemetery where l would often take a wander.

Names, dates, ages, monuments – sometimes professions – there’s a wealth of social history in that peaceful place.

So one blue-sky day this past week l wandered through the old St Mary’s Churchyard at Bathwick. It’s a closed cemetery now but much work has gone into identifying some of the more famous or unusual ‘occupants’ who rest there.

Well worth a wander.
