Bath MP Wera Hobhouse has called the energy price cap announcement a disaster for many and has called for the Government to step in to cancel the hike.
This comes after Ofgem announced that the energy price cap will be hiked to £3,549 a year, plunging many into financial hardship. The record 80% October increase, announced by regulator Ofgem, will see a typical default tariff customer paying an extra £1,578. This follows a 54% increase in April, which saw average bills surge to £1,971 a year.
Liberal Democrat Climate and Energy Spokesperson Wera Hobhouse reacted to the Energy Price Cap announcement:
“This is catastrophic for millions of families and households across the country. Lives are at risk this winter without Government support to tackle soaring energy bills. Earlier this year a constituent wrote to me and said they had to spend all day in bed to keep warm. Others have said they no longer want to use a cooker and want to cook on an open fire instead.
“This is disastrous and the Conservatives have offered no solution. The energy price hike must be cancelled. As millions suffer, the Conservatives are sitting back and doing nothing. No policy from the government, no plan from Liz Truss or Rishi Sunak. They have no idea how much pain these energy prices will cause our country and to people in our region. Make no mistake, they are unfit to govern.
“There is no other option but for energy prices to be frozen before these rises wreak havoc in our communities. Then we need a proper plan to be put in place to bring bills down next year.”
