The missing plaque.

Yesterday, Wednesday, May 11th, marked 1,049 years since King Edgar was crowned as the first king of all England at Bath Abbey.

The ceremony took place in 973AD and in 1973 Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip visited the Abbey to give thanks for 1000 years of the monarchy.

Normally there is a plaque commemorating that first English coronation on the exterior wall at the east end of the Abbey.

Several people have asked me where it is.

I hear it is on its way back. The Abbey’s new communications officer Jenni Potter told me: ‘The screws are having to be made especially for the plaque, which is currently in progress.’

  1. Another previously missing plaque now back in place in the N Transept, after a long absence, is the memorial to 4th Somerset Light Infantry. I saw it today but it is largely hidden behind flooring/staging (hopefully temporarily). My Gt Uncle’s name is on it, hence my interest. Interior of the Abbey looking magnificent, in all other regards.

  2. The North Transept has been used for storage for some time and I don’t think that’s likely to change. A shame that the attractive windows there aren’t now properly visible.
