Bath’s Cleveland Bridge is on course to re-open to traffic – if only partially – at the end of the month. That’s after millions will have been spent repairing the historic and listed structure.
However, there’s nothing currently in place to stop the HGV’s coming back to rumble across it.
I sat down with the B&NES Cabinet member for Transport, Cllr Manda Rigby and asked her if there was anything that could be done other than her – and others – lying in the middle of the road.
We talk about Bath traffic in general and whether a Congestion Charge might not be the best was of dealing with it.
Also would her administration admit that they are ‘car haters’ when it came to dealing with congestion in general.

On HGVS and despite Cllr Rigby’s intelligence and grasp of the matter it is implied there is no solution, or any there might be is not hers nor her Council’s to implement. “It’s not our decision” being the short version.
For any long-term improvements and actual benefits to be made, why do Council not encourage, challenge, or influence decision makers to consider penalties relating to allowing HGV through traffic which, in reckless negligence, continues to adversely affect the health and wellbeing of Bath citizens? Laws governing the poisoning of people and how highways are used are not the same thing.
Interesting interview. I find it perverse whenever a war on cars/motorists is mooted. If anything, there is a war on those seeking a low carbon lifestyle, demonstrated in part by how those walking and cycling the London Road will soon be sharing it with 44,000kg vehicles again.
