Despite Covid restrictions, Bath’s long-established Silver Ring Choir has continued to thrive.
When new Musical Director, John Sandford, took up the mantle in February 2020, little did he know that he would only have five weeks of face to face rehearsals before lockdown began.
However, due to his infectious enthusiasm and technical prowess, members have continued to enjoy their Monday evening rehearsals on Zoom, helping to maintain morale through these difficult months, both for choir members and their virtual audiences.
The choir has a long-standing link with Bridgemead Nursing Home – through their chairman Marian McNeir MBE – and were delighted to perform a virtual concert for the residents there last month, complete with supportive message from local MP Wera Hobhouse.
John told Bath Newseum: It has been wonderful to see how the power of music can lift the soul in these troubled times.”
Marian McNeir, Chairman of the SRC said how delighted she was that local MP, Wera Hobhouse was able to join us when the choir sang for residents at Bridgemead Residential Home.
” It boosted morale in the home,” she said, “and equally with our choir members who had a performance, albeit virtual, to rehearse for.”
Plans are now afoot for a grand gala concert next year to celebrate the choir’s 70th anniversary. New members are always welcome, particularly in the bass and alto sections.

Christ Church choir in Julian Rd has recorded music (hymn and/or anthem) every week during lockdown when there hasn’t been a service with choir in the church. Choir members video themselves singing at home as they listen to a backing track, and the results are edited together. They are played during the livestreamed services then added to the church’s YouTube channel.
