It’s sad that the city’s various ‘acts of remembrance’ were badly affected by the pandemic this year but the Mayor of Bath’s office has sent the following information and some visuals – plus an address from the Mayor herself, Cllr Manda Rigby.
The Right Worshipful The Mayor of Bath (Councillor Manda Rigby) has given the following quote: “It was a real honour to be able to lay the first wreath on behalf of the citizens of Bath on Remembrance Sunday. Even under these circumstances it was incredibly important we ensured we did not forget the sacrifices made during many conflicts.”
Major (Rtd) Roger Evans, Royal British Legion Remembrance Organiser (Bath) said “The Royal British Legion endorses the Mayor’s comments, and I am glad we managed to arrange the events this year due to the present climate.”
THE DEDICATION OF THE FIELD OF REMEMBRANCE was held at the Abbey Church Yard in Bath on Sunday 1 November 2020 at 2.00 pm.
Order of Proceedings:Reverend Canon Guy Bridgewater, Rector of Bath Abbey, led a short Service with prayers, and thanksgiving for all those who gave their lives that we might live. Major (Rtd) Roger Evans, RBL Bath Remembrance Organiser, read The Exhortation ‘For the Fallen’. Bugler Mr Harry Leafe, a member of the City of Bath Brass Band, played the Last Post & Reveille. The Standard, carried by Mr Matthew Smith, ex ACF, was lowered for the Two Minutes Silence. Major Evans read The Kohima Epitaph: When you go home, tell them of us and say, “For your tomorrow we gave our today”.
Reverend Canon Bridgewater gave the Dedication: “Accept, O God, this plot of ground, to be a Field of Remembrance of that great multitude of men and women who made the supreme sacrifice in time of war. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen”, followed by the Lord’s Prayer and the blessing.
REMEMBRANCE SUNDAY – WREATH LAYING was held at the War Memorial, Royal Victoria Park, Bath on the morning of Sunday 8 November 2020.
Major Evans laid the Royal British Legion Wreath, and The Right Worshipful The Mayor of Bath (Councillor Manda Rigby) planted the first poppy cross on behalf of the citizens. Public were invited to plant their crosses after the main party had departed.
