Here’s a little mystery that hopefully one of my followers can help with.
John Crocker has sent me a picture (above) and the following message:
I was walking (climbing) up Langridge Lane today when l saw this spring by the side of the road. The lintel has a carved inscription containing a date plus other characters.
Does anyone know what they mean? All l know of that year was that civil war was raging in America and the Theatre Royal in Bath was gutted by fire – and subsequently rebuilt.
Do let us know if you can help John.
It’s a full date, isn’t it? 13 Feb(ruary) 1862?
In the 1861 census Wynter Thomas BLATHWAYT, curate at Langridge is at Langridge Rectory, Old Street, Langridge, Bath, Somerset with his wife Frances and 3 sons.
