Residents of Bath’s newest residential quarter – the Crest Nicholson Riverside development – seem to have given a ‘thumbs up’ to their latest incomer.
It’s the Maid of the Bridge – a 4 metre high contemporary sculpture – unveiled today – which is literally made of unwanted parts of the recently-restored Victoria Bridge.
On their website – Riverside Community Voice – they describe her as ‘serenely lovely’ and ‘a new and very welcome visitor’ – though she is firmly bolted into place overlooking the new park area being created between the two high-rise contemporary apartment blocks that stand as flag ships to this major regeneration project.
The sculpture – made up of strips of metal held together with two and a half thousand bolts – was created by Larkhall-based artist Anna Gillespie. Bath engineers Buro Happold advised on structural detail and the whole structure was put together by IronArt – another Larkhall-based firm.
The statue – which is part of Crest Nicholson’s art policy for the riverside redevelopment of an old industrial site – will be illuminated at night and visible from the towpath on the opposite side of the River Avon.
