Bath’s iron maiden is unveiled.

Residents of Bath’s newest residential quarter – the Crest Nicholson Riverside development – seem to have given a ‘thumbs up’ to their latest incomer.

Maid of the Bridge is unveiled. She is very much the spirit of her placing. Close to the suspension bridge that provided her body which flows in the direction of the river alongside her.

It’s the Maid of the Bridge – a 4 metre high contemporary sculpture – unveiled today – which is  literally made of unwanted parts of the recently-restored Victoria Bridge.

On their website – Riverside Community Voice – they describe her as ‘serenely lovely’ and ‘a new and very welcome visitor’ – though she is firmly bolted into place overlooking the new park area being created between the two high-rise contemporary apartment blocks that stand as flag ships to this major regeneration project.

Representatives of Crest Nicholson, Buro Happold and IronArt join Anna for a photo in front of the newly-placed sculpture.

The sculpture – made up of strips of metal held together with two and a half thousand bolts – was created by Larkhall-based artist Anna Gillespie. Bath engineers Buro Happold advised on structural detail and the whole structure was put together by IronArt – another Larkhall-based firm.

The statue – which is part of Crest Nicholson’s art policy for the riverside redevelopment of an old industrial site – will be illuminated at night and visible from the towpath on the opposite side of the River Avon.IMG_1423

I had a chance to catch up with the artist and Peter Dickinson who is the Lead Artist for Crest’s growing list of installations.
