'B.C' in Great Pulteney Street
‘B.C’ in Great Pulteney Street

Just days ago l was asking if anyone could solve the mystery of the initials ‘B.C’ carved into the front of number 48 Great Pulteney Street and also spotted on terrace walls in Vane Street and at the back of Darlington Place.

So far the mystery remains and now your Director has found another puzzle. This time beneath his feet in Walcot Street.

What are these strange indentations in the middle of what l assume is pennant stone paving which lines the pavement area on the left hand side facing the town centre.

This one is shaped like a wine-glass with a thick stem!

They look like drainage channels. Were the stone originally lined up so a channel ran into the gutter?

One indentation is shaped like a wine glass with a very thick stem!

Can anyone help me with this?

  1. The initials in the stonework of GPS etc are probably stonemason’s so that the amount of stones laid can be counted and he paid accordingly
